Choosing Gear

The Right Shoes

Mountain Bike

Comparing a hard tail Mountain bike with a soft tail on a sealed road, you would say that the soft tail loses force via the suspension. But the way mountain bike are designed since 2011 sees more power to the pedals.

The Major reason someone would consider a Soft tail mountain bike would be assisting with the centre of gravity on descending as well as comfort of riding over corrugations (think of a shock absorber for your bum).

One great Soft tail mountain bike we think you should look at is the Merida "One Twenty". In 2011 we gave one of these away as a random entry draw at the Magnetic Island Adventurethon. Check out this video about what they have improved in 2012.

Note- Experienced mountain bike riders can actually ride hard tails with great effect, so ensure you check out some of the how to video's on mountain bike technique

Paddle Craft (Kayak, Surf Ski or Outrigger)

A paddle leash and leg rope are a must for the paddle leg because if you fall off your boat the wave action can move your boat away from you very quickly. Having it attached to your paddle or to your leg will ensure you can get back into race HQ without the need for a rescue party.

You can use a piece of cord or rope if you don’t have a proper leash.

What other gear will i need?
