ADVENTURETHON-3 Stage Race

That’s right, Adventurethon is returning to Magnetic Island so lock in 27th & 28th April for some fun and excitement. We are bringing the Demolish stage race format to Maggie so you can run, ride and paddle the very best terrain the island has to offer. Moreover, you can pick and choose which stages you want to participate in and skip those you don’t like unless you really want some adventure then you will take on all three stages and DEMOLISH yourself!

Not prepared to get smashed? We have you covered as well with shorter, easier options so you don’t have to compete with the big boys. Take on participants of similar ability to you and see how good it feels to have fun.

Start your weekend of fun, thrills and adventure with a mountain bike ride around the always spectacular views and bushland areas of the island. Yes, there will be some challenging sections but isn’t that why we mountain bike? After recuperating from your ride and having a feed we challenge you to take on one of the paddle courses. The bravest will want to paddle from Horseshoe Bay to Picnic Bay via the awesome and uninhabited east and west coasts of the island to arrive at the finish ready for a good meal and rest and perhaps a cold one or two.  Start Sunday with a fun and adventurous trail run across some of the best tracks on the island. Watch out for drop bears koalas along the way and be prepared for an adrenalin charge if you tackle the longer distances; you might just get a glimpse of the sea from a vantage point that is unique, adventurous, heart pounding, rope stretching ……. Worked it out yet?

Beginners and Juniors can choose to challenge themselves at the shorter and less technical Taste or Junior distance. More adventurous riders looking for a bigger challenge can ride the Enduro event, a shorter but no less technical version of the longest ride, the Ultra. For some participants this will be the first of three stages as they attempt to complete the Ultimate Adventurethon Demolish. Others will take a more leisurely approach and perhaps only tackle the mountain bike stage before heading off to spectate at the other events and get their kicks that way. Whatever approach you take we guarantee you will have a blast. You won’t get bored as you traverse different terrains and obstacles on this exhilarating mountain bike course.

Ultra (38 km)

Date: 27th April

Location:  Horseshoe Bay

Race start: 7:30 am

Compulsory race briefing: 7:15 am

Course description:

The course winds its way around the single tracks and expansive views of Magnetic Island. This is a technical course in places as well as having sections of less technical gravel road to build up speed. Because of the technical sections it will feel longer than 38 km at times but you will have a marvellous variety of scenery to take your mind off the effort.

Enduro (16 km)

Date: 27th April

Location:  Horseshoe Bay

Race start: 9:00 am

Compulsory race briefing: 8:45 am

Course description:

Taste & Junior (8.5 km)

Date: 27th April

Location:  Horseshoe Bay

Race start: 9:30 am

Compulsory race briefing: 9:15 am

Course description:

The course winds its way around some less technical single tracks and open spaces around Horseshoe Bay. Not a difficult course but there are places that may test your peddling ability if you are not used to traversing many different types of terrain. Don’t let this deter you, any tricky bits are short and not ‘life threatening’ so even first timers will survive. Kids, why not get mum and dad to ride with you and teach them a thing or two about mountain biking!

Horseshoe to PicnicPaddle

Welcome to the Horseshoe to Picnic paddle – Adventurethon Demolish Magnetic Island – Stage 2.

This one is a real ripper! You will take on some of the most unspoilt scenery of the island from sea level as you leave the start lines and head into the blue. Beginners and Juniors get to circumnavigate the famous Picnic Bay Jetty, as do the Enduro participants, before heading to the finish and cheers of the spectators (they are always awesome at Picnic Bay). Competitors in the Ultra will visit the ‘dark’ side of the island. Rarely seen and uninhabited who knows what might surprise those brave souls! Lots of fun and excitement we expect.

AQUASCENE Spectators Boat on ULTRA PADDLE

Date: Saturday 27th April 2019

Presentations: 6:00 pm at Race HQ

All paddlers will receive their medallions at Presentations. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each category will be presented and all finishers will be invited to collect a finishers medallion.

General information:

Once out on an island what could be more appropriate than to explore the coastal waters. Absolutely, and we have courses to help you do that; long or short, elite or beginner, adult or child, mother or father, everyone is more than capable of completing one of the race distances on offer and having fun along the way. Yes, it may be a challenge, but that challenge will be far more mental than physical if you try the Taste/Junior courses. Don’t think you can do it; you really won’t know if you don’t try and no one other than yourself is capable of stopping you from trying to have fun.

Beginners and Juniors can choose to challenge themselves at the shorter and completely achievable Taste or Junior distance. More adventurous paddlers looking for a bigger challenge can tackle the longer Enduro event and those feeling really adventurous and the elite paddlers have the Ultra distance to challenge them. For some participants this will be the second of three stages as they attempt to complete the Ultimate Adventurethon Demolish. Others will take a more leisurely approach and perhaps only tackle the paddle stage and spectate at the other events and get their kicks that way. Whatever approach you take we guarantee you will have a fun.

The Enduro course takes you inland from Nelly Bay to conquer some of the awesome upland scenery that Magnetic Island has on offer. After enjoying the views you head downhill (yay) and return to the coast for a little seaside relaxation as you get closer to your own goal of completion of the challenge. Be prepared as you leave the beach because the fun isn’t restricted to a straight forward super awesome trail run! We want you to go home with different but fun experience, so we have one or two small obstacles for you to complete before the course deposits you at the finish line covered in glory. Yep, like the Ultra participants, you will have an abseil along the course so take a deep breath and enjoy the adrenalin rush but don’t forget to check out the view as well.

Taste & Junior (5.5 km)

Date: 28th April

Start Location:  Nelly Bay

Finish Location:  Picnic Bay

Race start: 9:10 am

Compulsory race briefing: 8:45 am

Course description:

From Nelly Bay the Taste/Junior course drops you onto the beach for an enjoyable section of coast but don’t get lulled into false ideas; all beaches end somewhere and yes, that is where the real adventure starts. Don’t be scared though, it is also where the real fun, and taste of a trail run, begins. Overall this super awesome trail run with spectacular views so yes you will have to go uphill sometimes but we promise they are only small hills and the views are truly worth the journey. A really exceptional taster of trail running that is very achievable so come on, get out there and try out one of the fastest growing sports around.

Format

Adventurethon Demolish has 3 different stages for you to choose from, RUN; RIDE; PADDLE.

The beauty of the DEMOLISH format is the opportunity to PICK AND CHOOSE events that appeal to you; for example, if you are an avid Mountain biker and can’t paddle, or find it hard to get a team together, you can just compete in the ride stage or add in the run stage to your schedule. Those that really want to challenge themselves are able to attempt all three stages to complete the ULTIMATE DEMOLISH.

Ultimate Demolish may sound a little tame to those athletes that are familiar with the standard Adventurethon format of continuous movement from one discipline to the next (triathlon style). However, here is an alternative way of thinking about this multi stage style of event which has also been adopted as part of the triathlon super league. As stand alone stages you have the opportunity to rest between disciplines and that means you can afford to expend a lot more energy on each stage. That is, go harder and produce better times, in each discipline. Much the same mindset you would have by taking a single discipline race. Does that sound tame? Trust us, it is really a tough assignment to compete well in all three disciplines despite the resting opportunities, just ask any super league triathlete and they will tell you that getting to rest between stages does not diminish the challenge because you have to go so much harder in every stage.

Within each stage there are a choice of distances to suit all comers, from the very beginners to elite athletes, so there is ample opportunity to mix and match stages and distances to suit your own abilities and perhaps challenge yourself.

Event stage times are designed to allow plenty of time for competitors and spectators to travel safely between stage locations so why not have a go at something new as well as take on disciplines you enjoy. If not competing in a stage why not head out and spectate so you get an appreciation of what is involved in other sports, but be careful, you might just get enthused and ‘wish you had been brave’ and taken the plunge so enter every discipline and finish your weekend with no regrets.

Stage 1: Horseshoe Bay Adventure Ride Saturday  morning (27th April)

Stage 2: Horseshoe to Picnic Paddle Saturday afternoon (27th April)

Stage 3: Magnetic Island Adventure Run Sunday morning (28th April)

location

All races will be on Magnetic Island over the weekend of 27th & 28th April 2019. There are several starting and finishing locations depending on the discipline and distance of the course you choose to enter so we have allowed sufficient time between races to allow you to easily transfer between race locations if you wish to compete in all 3 stages (Ultimate Demolish) and for spectators to move between start and finish locations to see what great fun the competitors are having. There is a regular bus service around the island that will enable you to get to all locations in time for event starts and finishes or there are vehicle hire operators on the island. You could also bike between locations if you are keen.

How to get to the Magnetic Island Adventurethon Demolish Event
