Adventurethon Outback Sprint – Big Bend Charters Towers– Limited places available

Briefing time: 8am

Race Start: 8:20am

Sunday, 24 June: 8am – 11am

  • Put together the 3 disciplines of Paddle, Run & Mountain Bike in a Scenic Hidden Gem in Outback Charters Towers for a fast-paced Sprint or Enticer event full of adrenaline. The location is ideal for camping and allows for a relaxed low stress have a go atmosphere getting back to the basics of getting out and enjoying a New landscape with your mates, no Egos no Judgements …have a swim with mates at Echo Hole when you are done!

 

Location: Big Bend, via Big Bend Rd (follow our markers down Big Bend Rd then Park at Adventurethon Parking Signs)

 

Outback Sprint

  • 7km paddle (River easy rapids & flat pools)
  • 7km Run
  • 18km Ride

Course description –

Paddle Flat pools with some sections of easy to paddle moving water, some easy grade 1 rapids and riffles to test yourself for a different challenge in this Amazing hidden gem of a place. After navigating the course down-stream you will turn around and must do a few small portages to allow competitors behind you to make their way downstream. Jump back into the flat parts of the river to navigate your way back to the Finish of the Kayak and ready to run

(suitable craft any paddle craft which can navigate easy rapids and shallow sections: kayak, SUP, Ski, outrigger, K1 etc  must have some buoyancy (EG FOAM or be a sealed unit like a ski) beginners are recommended to use plastic skis to allow you to bounce off rocks if you stuff up. Flip up rudders recommended for 99% of people to avoid rudder damage

  • Must wear a helmet (bike helmet or paddle helmet ok)
  • Must Wear footwear for portages over rocky/ rough and sometimes slippery terrain (booties or sneakers are most appropriate)
  • Bring Gaffa tape to repair craft in case of damage
  • NO LEASHES

Run

Run along the edges of the BIG bend “Island” switching between access tracks, the river’s edge & rocks and finishing with a scramble over the Basalt ROCKS at echo hole before getting to transition and picking up your Mountain Bike for the final ride.

MTB Ride

The Mountain Bike is mostly wide tracks that winds around the Big Bend Island FOR A TOTAL OF 3 LAPS before turning to the finish Shute. The tracks are of an easy grade and mostly a combination of slight uphills, Easy Downhills and flat sections that overlook the Amazing Burdekin River.

 

 

 

Outback Enticer

  • 2km Paddle (mostly flat, 1 slight turn into moving water easy)
  • 4km Run
  • 6km Ride

Course description

Paddle

Head upstream for a few hundred metres and U turn at the only section of easy to paddle moving water then head downstream onto the flat water to finish the rest of the paddle. Head past the Kayak loading area Downstream and turn the final buoy before a u turn and then navigate your way back to the Finish of the Kayak and ready to run.

(suitable craft any paddle craft: kayak, Sup, Ski, outrigger, SUP, K1 etc any rudder is ok , any layup is ok) Drag out any old boat for this one… it will survive this simple paddle.

Run
