Gibbo's Adventure
“My love of adventure started small but has led me to take on a 13km paddle, 23km Mountain bike, 12km trail run (as part of the Mike Carney Toyota Enduro) which I am really excited about.” Sam Giblett or “Gibbo” as many refer to him, has thrown himself outdoors and has gained more than just a sense of adventure.
In November 2012, overweight and unfit, Sam kicked off his lifestyle change, training once a week with then local Leela Hancox from Flex Your Fitness. Now 40kgs down he now trains 4 times a week with Sam Stedman from Outer Limits, including Paddle, Ride, Run for Adventurethon training and fitness, along with dietary help through dietician Jo Fairbrother.
“I started with the taste of Adventurethon at the 2013 event and then the next year went back to improve on my time. I had issues with the paddle and decided to put a bit of effort into that leg, purchasing a medium level surf ski due to budget and set about improving that leg.
I really enjoyed the mountain biking and was able to make decent amount of time up in that area.”
A year later, with an upgrade to a Stellar SR surf ski, plus regular training and tips on technique, has got Gibbo excited about the paddle leg this year.
“The boat is really stable and I feel confident in all conditions now. It’s amazing how much it has made a difference and I could never go back.”
As a local businessman, getting out and active helps Sam clear his head and keep his life in balance. Sam owns GNM GROUP QLD who are responsible for a number of major Plumbing, drainage, and civil works around Qld.
“Getting out to train in adventure gives me the chance to clear my head. I like to train first thing in the morning before my workday starts. It’s such a great way to start the day and certainly helps me balance out a big work week.
“Townsville is truly one of the best places to live and enjoy this type of lifestyle. There are so many different groups, clubs, and activities to join in on and be a part of”
Magnetic Island Adventurethon is on March 28 & 29, 2015. Registrations are limited and the last 2 years have sold out before the event.
